How the Little Cottage on the Pond came to be...
When we decided to move and build a house we did some extensive looking. Most of the model homes were two stories with media rooms and extra bedrooms. When we would inquire about smaller homes we would be told that for a family of six anything less than what we saw would be impossible to live in.
Poppycock.
We knew that what we wanted was a simple house with clean lines, zero hallways, and one main living space. So we picked a plan that came in at 2,000 square feet. We modified a would be study into an extra bedroom, giving our little cottage four bedrooms instead of three. We closed off an opening to the would be dining room to create a small library.
We don't have a media/game room. Instead, we sit together in the evenings and decide on a show to watch or what game to play.
A year and half later I am happy to report that smaller living has worked out just fine for this family of six. Proof that you can live big in a small house.
